What is Awana?
For over 60 years, Awana has been a leader in children’s ministry, helping churches and parents worldwide raise children and youth to know, love, and serve Christ. Awana began in 1941 as a weekly club that would appeal to churched and unchurched children, lead them to trust Christ for salvation, and grow them in enduring faith and service to God. Today, Awana is reaching almost 5 million children and youth and is an organization which fully integrates evangelism and discipleship programs for ages 2 to 18. Awana operates under five core principles: Centered on the Gospel, Scripture memory is key, fun and exciting, train students to serve, and leadership based. Why we serve
I was born and raised in Germany and lived there for twenty years attending chapel on base and the American schools. I moved to Florida where I met and married Rebecca. God led us to serve in a Christian children’s club called Awana at our local church in 2000. We also worked on the Central Florida Awana ministry team for 5 years which gave us another perspective on how to serve in Awana. It did not take long for us to realize that we had a passion for Awana. Around 2006, God began to stir in us a calling to serve as missionaries in Europe. In 2010, we learned about an opportunity to be an Awana missionary to both the English and German speaking Awana clubs. We stepped out in faith and through the application process; God reaffirmed our call to full-time ministry as Awana missionaries.
Whom we serve
First, we serve our American families serving in the U.S. military stationed throughout Germany. Second, we serve the many English-speaking Expats throughout Germany that attend English speaking churches. Finally, we serve German-speaking families.
How we serve
Our first goal in Germany is to support the established Awana clubs both in German and English speaking. We do this through club visits, online and on-site training, and personal phone calls. Next, we make Awana materials available in both English and German. We currently have a team translating the materials into German and have seen much progress in the last couple two years. Last, we aid individuals on US military bases, international churches, and German Evangelical churches to begin new Awana clubs. We train these individuals and their teams in effective children’s ministry as well as the ins and outs of running an Awana club to reach the children in their neighborhoods. We also serve in our local church and Christian school. Steve is a church elder, sound technician, and children’s Sunday School teacher and on the school parent leadership team. Rebecca is a Sunday school teacher and English teacher at the school. We have found that these connections…serve locally…
We had the privilege of beginning an Awana club at our local church in Wiesbaden in the fall of 2017. This group of children has been a testing group for our newly translated materials. It has been wonderful to watch this group not only grow in their knowledge of God’s word, but also grow in their excitement and ability to memorize God’s word.
